Enborne was the home of the Lloyd family during our novel. Reverend Nowes Lloyd was vicar of St Michael's and All Angels Church from 1771 until his death at the end of January 1789. He was buried in the churchyard on 3rd February 1789.

Reverend Lloyd was married to Martha Lloyd and they had four children born in the parish of Bishopstone, where they lived before moving to Enborne. Martha was born in 1765, Eliza in 1767, Charles in 1768 and Mary in 1771.

Charles died at the age of seven in the spring of 1775 from smallpox, during an epidemic that killed many people in the Enborne area. He was buried in St. Michael's and All Angels churchyard on 13th April 1775.

Mrs Lloyd's sister, Jane, was married to Reverend Thomas Fowle of Kintbury. As they lived in neighbouring villages, their children were brought up to play and socialise together, and the two families were very close.

Eliza Lloyd was married here to her cousin, Fulwar Fowle, on 15th August 1783 and Reverend Lloyd took the service.

When Reverend Lloyd died, a few months after this wedding, his wife and two single daughters were forced to leave the rectory to make way for the new incumbent. With no home of their own, they moved in the spring of 1789 to Deane and lived in the vacant rectory there, thus becoming close friends and neighbours of the Austens.
